May The Force Be With You

Meet 'The Enforcer':

My latest acquisition, Davros, before becoming a compost bin is to star as a forcing bin for my rhubarb.

My visit to the plot was curtailed as the ground was frozen, but I scoured a base for Davros around a rhubarb plant and pegged him down. Opening night is about 8 weeks from now!

Weekly Stats:

Time spent at plot: 30 mins
Money spent: £68 (£60 annual rental + £8 for Davros)

  1. It definitely looks like money well spent - roll on the rhubarb crumble!

  2. I'm hopefully off to a Rhubarb forcing shed in the Rhubard Triangle at the end of Feb - forcing the stuff by candlelight....maybe you could try that? Sounds like a lot of work. prefer the dustbin method!

  3. Great idea to use the bin as a forcer first. You got a good deal on it too.

  4. C&AP, I'm jealous! I'll own up now that I am only 'blanching' my rhubarb whereas the sheds are used to truly 'force' the crowns which have been dug up from the field and then prompted to produce stalks from the stored energy within them. I don't think the candles are used to promote production but rather to be a low energy light source for the benefit of the pickers. But I look forward to 'hearing' your account of your visit in due course.

  5. Like most plotters, I know a good deal when I see one. If all goes well I promise to post a picture of the crumble!
