...until September

Well it pretty much has rained until now. Comparing my pictures from last year the crops are behind by about two weeks. That's bad news for the 'exotics' (peppers, tomatoes, blueberries). Thank goodness I decided not to give any space over to sweetcorn!  Here in Scotland without a proper greenhouse you deserve a medal for growing tomatoes, cucumbers, aubergines, okra etc. My cucumbers have bombed completely. The tomatoes are good for quantity but now I'm biting my nails waiting for them to turn.

One down, twenty to go!

I've been waitin...

Blueberries or Greenberries?
On the plus side the runner beans are going like the clappers, courgettes too, and they haven't yet succumbed to mildew. The raspberries just keep on coming.   Leaf and root beetsa re doing well and brassicas are looking good for the autumn. I've done some successional sowing where the potatoes were but now I've had to accept that it's too late to sow anything in the remaining space where the peas were. So it's goodbye 2011. 2012 starts here with the first manure being dug in.

Getting down to it
Maybe the weeds will stop growing soon too.

  1. This would be my first year attempting to grow tomatoes and what a miserable year for them - like you I'm watching and waiting for that colour change!

As for sweetcorn... the less said the better. It's such a shame, given last year was a stunning one for corn.

  2. Over here on the North Side my blueberries have had a good year - nearly all ripened by now, and I'm chasing away the blackbirds daily. Could it be a little Gulf Stream effect in the Firth of Forth...?

  3. Further south in sub tropical Yorkshire the tomatoes that actually set are ripening, sweet corn though looks pathetic just not enough rain!

  4. Just noticed the rainfall figures from RBGE for August are 149.6mm. Rainfall for Ossett 134.9mm but that's for March to August inclusive. Our rainfall for August just 35.0mm - but it still doesn't stop the weeds growing.

  5. There's always some crops that do well whilst others suffer depending on the weather. Lucky having a greenhouse all my toms and peppers are ripening now but the cucumbers have been poor again, I think the cold nights have hit this year. Always sad approaching the end of the season.

  6. I've had almost the opposite - tomatoes have been ripening for weeks, while the runner beans have been the most pitiful I've ever seen. Courgettes not much to write home about either. Sweetcorn and cucumbers also pretty rubbish.

  7. Woo hoo! You've got great crop anyway and if they never ripen you can still make chutney!

  8. Our blueberries have ripened but they do so over such a long period that we only ever harvest a handful at a time. Maybe we'll have more next year as the bushes get bigger. Ever the optimist

  9. Look how looooooooong your tomato trusses are! How long do they blueberries take to ripen would you say? I have grown some for the first time this year and they are going well, although not quite as far along as yours just yet. I can't believe this is it for you for 2011... let's find you a greenhouse sponsor!

  10. I don't think the weeds will EVER stop growing...I keep saying I will start eating them soon....so easy to grow!!

It's all looking great...I have had trouble with bell peppers this year and I am going to giver up on aubergines forever as of now...I don't like them too much anyway so it's no great loss for me. My tomatoes are starting to turn quickly now...lots of soups and sauces to be made!!
