Asparagus Tips

It's been a rotten weekend for working on the allotment. Snow on Saturday pretty horrible today. But it brightened up enough today for me to plant out the asparagus I bought (on impulse) last weekend.  Here's what it's all about:

To start with you need good drainage:

Then you need plenty of fertility:

These may have been the inspiration for the Alien movies.

  1. Oh Mal..they are kinda creepy how they look and so I am pleased you posted a photo of them...

You don't have to plant them as deep where you live I don't think, as we do here...

If they go dormant (go golden or brownish) earlier in the fall than you think they should....that's normal. The following year, they will last longer and the ferns will be greener longer. I was alarmed by this you see..the first year mine were in, so just wanted to share that bit.

Can't wait to see a photo of the new fronds in the coming months.

  4. Euwww, they are not pretty just yet, are they?! Asparagus is one of my favourite "treats" (it's usually quite expensive to buy here) and I have never had it fresh out of the garden. I'll bet it's quite spectacular.
