What to do with that extra Bank Holiday day? Given the state of the plot there was no question: Weeding. I started at on end and just got on with it. Of course it rained incessantly. After three hours I had progressed 6 metres along the bed through raspberries, strawberries, runner beans, jerusalem artichoke and french beans I have now discovered that my average weeding rate is 10 minutes per square metre or 6 square metres per hour. Given the overall plot size is 180 square metres, if it was all planted, it would take me 30 hours to hand weed the whole plot! Crikey! Thank goodness for potatoes!

And now something for Tany:
It's the reserve celeriac!
That extra day makes all the difference! Hoeing us fine, but there is some satisfaction to be had from properly hand weeding out a patch
ReplyDeleteI've given up on weeding the field. Given that there's 20-something full plots, only three and a half are occupied so it has become weed city. Sadly I think the landowner and her best friends - the Chairman and Treasurer - have a vested interest in keeping the site empty, despite claiming a fair few quid in public money grants from a council chaired by the landowners husband - can you smell it too? The few of us who haven't walked away are preparing for something nasty to surface!!!
ReplyDeleteOur weeding has been paused in favour of harvesting at the moment so the weeds are knocking up a rugby score!
ReplyDeleteYou're putting me to shame, I shall have to get to my plot and do some weeding myself.
ReplyDeleteOh 180 sqm, we just got ourselves a 125 plot half overgrown other half was covered with black sheeting. Currently breaking threw it. Started by digging a dry plot....not funny, someone told us about wetting it down so that happened.
ReplyDeleteThanks for a nice blog, keep up the good work.
I'm hoping our celeriac will be better than the celery we tried last week. Must check it out!
ReplyDeleteThe celeriac is looking good Mal...Mine is looking great above the ground but this makes me wonder if the leaves are taking all the plants energy...I think I may do a little cutting back this weekend to see if that helps the root produce....I am going to do this with just half though so I can compare results!
ReplyDeleteAre you keeping this in pots or planting it in the ground?
Good effort with the weeding Mal. I finally got my plots cleared of them this week. Oops the grass needs cutting again.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great way to use your time. Your hitting two birds in one time. Job well done on the weeding.
